On the 2nd floor of the nat. portrait gallery is a topographical map of dc.............from 1862..............a year into the civil war, by a Woolworth, and such and such a company of new York.................several things that stood out to me..........topographical is used for hills...............and land features...........not just a street map......this map included streets.......
For one, the legend of the map.............there were two places in DC that had the exact longitude and latitude............one was the national observatory.................which on the map was in green, and by the Potomac river..........more or less where the Kennedy center is now.............which was not built until like 1970 or so................and the other was the dome of the us capital...........not even the capital, but the dome specifically....................and longitude was measured from Greenwich, which the legend stated.....................in England..................the heading was astronomical measurements.........it only listed those two............and not navy, but national.......
