The Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro Station is located in Downtown DC serving the neighborhoods of Chinatown and Penn Quarter. The station opened on December 15, 1976 and serves the Green, Yellow and Red Lines. The metro station is only one stop away from Metro Center (11th and G Streets), which services the Orange and Blue Lines.
In the past, the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro Station was named "Gallery Place" for its proximity to the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In 1986, "Chinatown" was added to the station name to honor the Chinese residents living in the area.
The Metro station is conveniently located next to the Verizon Center, home to NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, and the Georgetown Hoyas Men’s Basketball team. The metro station is also next to Gallery Place, which includes numerous retail stores, Lucky Strike Bowling, and Regal Cinema Stadium 14 which brings the big screen to visitors with stadium-style seating.
Although the Metro station is safe, a major problem is the number of rude teenagers who make the entrance of Gallery Place-Chinatown station their chillout spot during the summer. Several fights have been reported on and around the station.
