The mighty Mississippi
River begins its winding journey to the Gulf of Mexico as a mere
18-foot wide knee-deep river in Itasca State Park. From here the river
flows north to Bemidji, where it turns east, and then south near Grand
Rapids. It will flow a total of 694 miles before working its way out of Minnesota.

I was doing the Minnesota part of the Great River Road. .... stop was St Cloud, Minnesota, so we decided to drive up to the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
A Trip North to the Mississippi Headwaters. The Mississippi River gets its start in Minnesota, and its headwaters
at Itasca State Park are a must-see destination. This route follows the
Great River Road north from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, tracing the Mississippi as it arcs across northern Minnesota.
