I am related to King Charles of England, via my dad, he was just here, L street library, NW, we are like his 3rd or 4th cousins, my mom's side is the Indian King, who made a Pan Indian Conferderation, the great Shawnee Chief Tecumshe...

The "Death of Tecumseh" panel in the U.S. Capitol's Frieze of American History depicts the 1813 Battle of the Thames, where the Shawnee chief Tecumseh was killed by a U.S. soldier, Colonel Richard M. JohnsonThe panel shows the battle in grisaille (a monochrome painting that imitates sculpture) and symbolizes the end of Tecumseh's efforts to unite Native American tribes against westward expansion. Artist Filippo Costaggini also included a self-portrait hidden in a tree on the right side of the scene.
The scene and its symbolism
  • The battle:
The panel is based on the Battle of the Thames, where Tecumseh fought alongside the British. His death was a major blow to the Native American confederacy, breaking the momentum of their resistance.
  • The artists:
While the frieze was primarily designed by Constantino Brumidi, Filippo Costaggini took over after Brumidi's death and completed this specific panel.
  • Symbolism:
The panel represents the traditional view of the time that Native Americans were an obstacle to the nation's progress. Over time, the interpretation has evolved to acknowledge Tecumseh as a leader who was fighting for the rights and land of his people
