Every Jaw-Dropping Mulan Theory That’ll Leave You Beyond Stunned
You would think that 17 years after the release of Mulan, there’d be nothing about the epic Disney film that would shock you… but you’d be WRONG. Just like other classics Beauty and the Beast and Pocohontas, the China-based story is packed with hidden nuggets. Here are five of the most jaw-dropping:
1. There’s a connection to Tarzan. If you look closely, a miniature version of Mulan’s dog, Little Brother, falls out of Jane’s dad’s pockets. While this could just be seen as an Easter Egg, Disney Theory had a different idea in mind: “It’s a mascot Jane’s father took with him on all his adventures. Little Brother’s appearance in Mulan must be based on that toy, meaning Jane or one of her siblings went on to work in the movie industry and included the mascot in honor of their adventurer father.” Mulan hit theaters a year before Tarzan did, though, so… Not so sure about this one. 2. Mulan exists as a fictional heroine within the actual Disney universe! The same theorists behind the aforementioned Tarzan theory also claims that “Mulan is the only fictional film we can be certain exists in the Disneyverse, as we see the same poster that was used to advertise the film in our world. There is even a restaurant in the film called Mulan’s Wok, which is presumably some kind of PR tie-in.”

3. Mulan is the Great Stone Dragon. Tumblr user sansaspark had an interesting theory as to why Mushu couldn’t wake the GSD up — it’s ’cause it was already awake inside Mulan! “During the scene when Mulan decides to go to war instead of her father, she decides to do it while sitting on the foot of the Great Stone Dragon. The image of the dragon looking over Mulan is repeated several times throughout the sequence, and the bolts of lightning strike at significant times whenever the dragon is in sight. When Mulan takes her father’s scroll and when she is praying to her ancestors, the Great Stone Dragon can be seen. It is also engraved on the sword Mulan uses to cut her hair and the handles of the wardrobe containing the armor are in the shape of the dragon’s head. The dragon’s eyes glowing in the temple symbolizes Mulan’s role as protector of her family awakening, instead of the actual dragon. The reason Mushu couldn’t wake the dragon is because the dragon was no longer there. Mulan is implied to be the Great Dragon that protects her family.”
4. Wait, no, Mushu’s actually the Great Stone Dragon. On the same thread, another user stated another GSD theory: “Mushu’s the Great Stone Dragon, and he failed terribly at his task, and was cursed to be the gong ringer. Him being sent to aid Mulan was a redemption quest.”

5. Mushu is the real hero. While it’s true that Mulan’s bravery is unmatched, it’s because of Mushu’s fake letter from the General to Chi Fu that the troop even marched into battle. According to one particular Reddit user’s theory, the delivery of that letter is “what actually enabled the Imperial forces to overpower the Huns. Without going to that destroyed village and meeting up with the Huns shortly afterward, the Capitol would have been overpowered by the Hun army, and Mulan, her crew and her family would probably be dead. Mushu really did prove himself to the ancestors and rightfully reclaim his spot with them.”
