At the time, it had the only commercial jet service in the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area.^[17] Truman arrived in the Independence from Washington National carrying Governor William Preston Lane, Jr. and Baltimore Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr. on his first aircraft flight.^[18] The following month the airlines moved to the new airport from Baltimore Municipal Airport (southeast of Baltimore at 39.25°N 76.53°W).
