Announcement: Few In C.F. Protected Under New Sewer Lateral Ordinance

Few In C.F. Protected Under New Sewer Lateral Ordinance

CLIFTON FORGE — Out of 1,500 active utility accounts, only 20 are protected under a new sewer lateral ordinance that was adopted last year by Clifton Forge Town Council.
In April 2014, after more than six months of discussing various options to address the cost and responsibility for sewer laterals between an individual’s property line and the main sewer line,Clifton Forge Town Council adopted an ordinance making the town responsible for the maintenance and repair of this section of sewer pipe once the owner installed a town-approved cleanout on his sewer lateral.
The town would inspect cleanouts at no cost and install a cleanout where needed for the cost of materials ($60). The owner could also use a contractor to install.
A $3 per month sewer lateral fee was adopted, effective July 1, 2014, to offset the costs of repairs incurred by the town for faulty lines in the future.
After almost eight months, very few citizens have taken advantage of the free cleanout inspection (8) and only 12 owners have had cleanout installed, or are waiting for installation, by the town for the $60 fee.
Until a cleanout is installed and/or inspected, the owner remains responsible for any repairs to the often times troubled section of their sewer lateral, Clifton Forge officials remind residents.
While Public Works installs cleanouts when requested, and as time is available, residents are encouraged to consider paying the $60 material fee at their earliest convenience to avoid costly repairs to their sewer line between their property line and the main line in the future.
