Charles de R�musat (1797-1875) was a leading force in the opposition to the Restoration government in the 1820s and to the Second Empire in 1851. He served as an elected member of the Chambre des d�put�s from 1830 to 1848 and again in 1873, as minister of foreign affairs in 1871, and was inducted into the Acad�mie fran�aise in 1846. Norman R. Shapiro is professor of romance languages and literatures at Wesleyan University.
