So this is decreasing every year but in 2005 about 500 people’s deaths were caused by elephants.
About 100 elephants are killed every day in Africa. Only about 415,000 remain. There are probably only 6,000 - 8,000 African elephants in captivity. Many of these animals were born in captivity through breeding programs.
Indian (Asian) elephants may kill up to 360 or so humans a year in situations where, shall we say, humans and the elephants are involved in human/elephant conflicts. This is where the elephant population and the human population are vying for the same territory. Not unlike white tailed deer in a number of states. No more than 35,000 to 45,000 survive in the wild.
Poaching of elephants, both Asian and African continues even though all elephants are endangered. The ivory tusks of elephants is coveted in places like China where it can command prices around $1,500 per pound. (Tusks can weigh up to 250 pounds.)
The American Wildlife Foundation and http://ElephantConservation.org are just two organizations working to save these beautiful, intelligent and important creatures.
