Maybe the computer scientists in the program wanted to play him a 3rd time and break the tie.........and maybe IBM management decided not to b/c of a recession.........or there was not enough funding...............IBM is a big company but a super computer is a super computer..................maybe the company at that time was under financial hardship..........even strong companies go through tough times every now and then..........I am not sure......
And again.........NONE of this is shoving my opinion down anyone's throat...........and it is just good research.........investigative science and common sense to consider different possibilities.............and play devil's advocate.................that the reason they declined at Garry K's offer at a 3rd match..........might have been one of many reasons........maybe he was really playing my father............and someone might have noticed Paul's playing style..........I am not sure.........but after reading parts of The Perfect Bet and The Signal and the Noise.............and how these guys model just about everything from sports to betting in casinos...............................and reading the book Moneyball as well...............................I think they thought mapping out chess completely would be a major move forward in computer science........................
And what makes so much sense about that......is that the rules of chess are known.......we made them........they are written down....................................whether chess is a good game or not.........the number of moves if finite.......ALL the rules are known, and the sheer quantity of the number of possible moves is very large...........esp. down the line...........making chess perfect to model completely with a computer............whereas with the weather...........................a roulette wheel..........u might get many of the factors..............but sometimes it is a guessing game as to what the different variables even are...........and how they interact..............pollution affects the weather.............a meteor hitting the Earth could affect the weather...........how in the world would u know?..............chess would be perfect..........would have been...............in 1996............
Philly, PA.........Rising Suns...............American history..........next year in NYC............was chess history...............as the computer scientists at IBM mapped out chess completely...................where at worst case..........they would tie.........only if someone played perfectly..........but who does....................?? Other than a super computer that is..........
