Yes, President James A. Garfield, the 20th president, was indeed assassinated in Washington, D.C. He was shot on July 2, 1881, at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station. His assassin, Charles J. Guiteau, was a disgruntled office-seeker. Garfield died later from his injuries in Elberon, New Jersey, on September 19, 1881
