The Draper Manuscript Collection
The Draper Manuscript Collection. 491 volumes on 123 microfilm rolls and 84 microfiche cards. 1740-
1891.

This is the 1980 microfilm edition of The Draper Manuscript Collection held by the State Historical
Society of Wisconsin. Lyman Copeland Draper created the Draper Manuscript Collection and the
Collection reflects his interest in “the history of the trans-Allegheny West, a region embracing the
western areas of the Carolinas and Virginia, portions of Georgia and Alabama, the entire Ohio River
Valley, and part of the upper Mississippi Valley, from the period of the frontier conflicts in the
1740’s and 1750’s to the American Revolution and the War of 1812.” The Collection is arranged
into fifty series and 491 volumes.
The Collection is notoriously difficult to use. There is no “every name index” but there is a
published guide and several published calendars specific series within the Collection:

This is the essential starting point for using the Collection. The introduction includes a brief
biography of Lyman C. Draper, a scope and content statement for the Collection, and a
history of the Collection. There is a general description of each series and content notes for
each volume within a series. In addition, there are four appendices: 1. Revolutionary War
Pension Applications, 2. Additional Personal Data, 3. Maps, and 4. Reel List.
