With her platinum blonde hair and signature red lipstick, Marilyn Monroe easily had one of the most iconic looks of all time. But before she became a big Hollywood star, the actress — who would have turned 89 years old in 2015 — looked very different.

In 1940, she was just a regular 14-year-old (born Norma Jeane) growing up in California:

And in 1947, the 21-year-old started her modeling career with her naturally brown curly hair. But she had upgraded to perfectly elegant eyebrows and a bright — not yet seductive — smile:

Marilyn had yet to appear in The Seven Year Itch (1955) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), nor sang "Happy Birthday" for President Kennedy. Back then, she was just another aspiring actress with no idea how instantly recognizable she would someday become.
