The same general reason that they built the Panama canal............was the same reason they built the Suez canal............to shorten the distance of travel............................it is a long way around the Cape of Good Hope............to and from the Far East and Central Asia.................India......the spice route...............................................but going through the Med and between Egypt and Israel..........shortens the trip considerably..........just going straight across Panama is far easier than going South of the Southern tip of South America..........

Labor disputes and a cholera epidemic slowed construction, and the Suez Canal was not completed until 1869–four years behind schedule. On November 17, 1869, the Suez Canal was opened to navigation. Nov 17, 2014 - The Statue of Liberty was originally intended for the canal. As the Suez Canal neared completion in 1869, French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi tried to convince Ferdinand de Lesseps and the Egyptian government to let him build a sculpture called “Egypt Bringing Light to Asia” at its Mediterranean entrance.
