She saw one of my family members talking to animals, and thought it was only Indians who possessed spiritual power.......she asked the man how he got it..............he showed her a Bible, she had never heard of Christ Jesus, and told her he was one of Jesus' direct descendants...
Pocahontas's "love story" in England is based on her marriage to tobacco planter John Rolfe, which began during her captivity and was a political alliance rather than a fairytale romance. The two married in 1614 after she was baptized and given the name Rebecca, and they had a son, Thomas, before traveling to England in 1616. In England, she was presented at court but fell ill and died in 1617 before she could return to Virginia.
The marriage to John Rolfe
- Pocahontas was captured by English colonists in 1613 during a period of conflict.
- During her captivity, she was taught English customs and converted to Christianity, and married John Rolfe in April 1614.
- Their marriage helped end hostilities between the Powhatan and the English.
- Their son, Thomas Rolfe, was born in January 1615.
The trip to England
- In 1616, the Rolfe family traveled to England, where Pocahontas was presented as a symbol of the "civilized savage" to promote investment in the Jamestown colony.
- She met King James I and Queen Anne at a masque at Whitehall Palace.
- Her time in England was the first and only time she traveled overseas
