Engaging in a sexual relationship with a patient is a severe ethical and legal violation in psychology and all other mental health professions. It is universally prohibited because it is a profound misuse of the therapist's power, exploits the patient's trust and vulnerability, and can cause significant, long-lasting psychological harm.
Why sexual contact with a patient is always unethical
- Abuse of power: The therapist-patient relationship has an inherent power imbalance. The patient is often in a vulnerable or dependent state when seeking help. A therapist who initiates a sexual relationship is abusing this position of trust and power for their own gratification.
- Impossibility of consent: Because of this power differential, a patient cannot give truly informed or valid consent to a sexual relationship with their therapist. Their vulnerability and trust can lead them to feel manipulated or pressured, making any apparent "consent" illegitimate.
- Compromises treatment: A sexual relationship immediately destroys the therapeutic alliance and any progress the patient may have made. The therapist loses their objectivity
