Stephen Ruddell

 (1768–1845) was a prominent American frontiersman and Baptist minister, best known for his 15-year captivity and adoption by the Shawnee, during which he became an adopted brother and close companion of the famous Shawnee leader Tecumseh

Early Life and Captivity

  • Capture: At age 12, Ruddell was captured by British and Shawnee forces during the attack on Ruddell’s Station in Kentucky in June 1780.
  • Adoption: He was adopted into the Shawnee tribe and given the name Sinnanatha (meaning "Big Fish").
  • Life with the Shawnee: Ruddell fully adapted to Native American life, becoming a warrior and marrying a Shawnee woman. He fought alongside the Shawnee in various battles against white settlers and the American military during the 1780s and early 1790
