An error in Google Maps led me to do some research and stumble upon this interesting site, about the old Beacon Field Airport, which until 1959 was where the Lowe's is now. There was also a Hybla Valley Airport nearby--and another at Skyline Drive, on the Arlington/Alexandria border.

Looks like they also tore down the City View Mansion in 1959--what a shame!

or is that the other one you were referring to on the ALX/ARL border?

No, I think the latter was called something else. It predates my time here. I think it was around into the 60s, for general aviation.

Hoover Field was where the Pentagon is now. It was the first airport to serve DC.....(Reagan) National Airport replaced Hoover when the Pentagon was built.

The airport on the Arl/Alex border was called Crossroads Airport originally...later named Washington-Virginia Airport, but many continued to call it Crossroads. Skyline is the name of the development that was built on the old airport site. A plane coming in for a landing at Crossroads hit the screen at the Sunset Drive-in theatre across the street.

I remember Crossroads well....used to ride my bike there and hang out talking to the plane owners and employees. One highlight was when one of the aircraft manufacturers...Piper or Cessna was offering demo flights for five bucks to drum up customers for flying lessons (and eventual plane sales, I suppose).

Had a heck of a time getting my mother to sign permission for me to go up for a ride. But I finally wore her down.

There was another general aviation airport in Falls Church....where Loehmann's Plaza is now on Arlington Blvd. I much preferred Crossroads.
