Another interesting aviation factoid is that the Wright Bros. did one of their early flights at Ft. Myer. There's a historical market on Route 50 commemorating the event.

Let's not forget Bolling Field, he military counterpart to National across the river. BTW, the Wright Brothers historic flight was for the US Army and went from Ft Myer to Sutter's Hill where the Masonic Temple in Alexandria now stands and back.
