Meredith Kercher's body was discovered on November 2, 2007, in the apartment she shared with housemates in Perugia, Italy. The discovery was made by one of her housemates' friends after they forced open her locked bedroom door. 
The sequence of events leading to the discovery was as follows:
  • Meredith's flatmate, Amanda Knox, returned to the apartment that morning and noticed the front door was open and blood in the bathroom she shared with Kercher.
  • Knox left and returned with her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, who called the police after unsuccessfully trying to force open Kercher's bedroom door.
  • Romanelli arrived at the scene and, upon learning that two mobile phones belonging to Kercher had been found abandoned in a nearby garden, demanded the police force the door open. The police initially declined to damage private property.
