In this infamous unsolved German crime, all six people present at the remote Hinterkaifeck farmstead (often described as a cottage or small farm) were murdered with a a mattock on March 31, 1922.

• Cäzilia Gruber (72), his wife
• Viktoria Gabriel (35), their widowed daughter

• Josef Gruber (2), Viktoria's son
• Maria Baumgartner (44), the new maid 

The perpetrator lived in the house with the corpses for three days after the murders, eating food and feeding the animals, before leaving.
