Franklin Scandal and Legal Issues
The FCFCU collapsed in 1988 due to financial fraud, leading to King's arrest and a 15-year prison sentence in 1991. 
Concurrently, the "Franklin scandal" emerged, involving allegations of child sex abuse, drug trafficking, and money laundering linked to King and others. These claims received considerable media attention. 
However, investigations by county and federal grand juries in 1990 concluded that these sexual abuse claims were a "carefully crafted hoax" based on perjured testimony. All related charges against King were dismissed
