The Chrysler Building is a 1,046-foot-tall, 77-story Art Deco skyscraper in New York City, completed in 1930. Designed by William Van Alen, it was commissioned by Walter Chrysler but is now owned by Signa Holding and RFR Holding. The building features automobile-inspired ornaments, and its iconic stainless-steel spire was a secret addition to make it the tallest building in the world for a short time.
History and design
  • Design and construction:
Architect William Van Alen designed the building, which was constructed between 1929 and 1930.
  • Automobile-inspired details:
The design includes ornaments inspired by Chrysler automobiles, such as eagle "cargoyles" resembling radiator caps and brickwork reliefs of racing cars with chrome hubcaps.
  • A secretly constructed spire was added to the blueprints, increasing its height to 1,046 feet and making it the world's tallest building upon completion. Its reign as the tallest lasted only 11 months until the Empire State Building was finished in 1931
