Now...........think to all the exploration after 1492...............................the Panama canal was not built until like 100 years ago.................so the Spanish,,,,,,,Dutch,,,,,,,,,,,French...........Portuguese............British.............etc..........explorers would have gone back to Western Europe via the Atlantic..........
