The Incident
On the morning of September 5, 1972, eight members of Black September scaled the fence into the Olympic Village and stormed the apartments housing the Israeli delegation. In the initial struggle, two Israeli athletes who resisted were killed, and nine others were taken hostage. 
The terrorists demanded the release of 234 Palestinian prisoners and two German left-wing extremists. The Israeli government, under Prime Minister Golda Meir, refused to negotiate, maintaining that doing so would endanger Israelis globally
